I decided to do something different. I’ve never painted a self-portrait before, and I’ve been thinking about this one for a while. This painting is based on an image of me when I lived in the West Bank in 2004. It was an exciting time for me. I finally felt like I was doing what I wanted to do with my life. Lots of joys and heartaches were ahead of me. I have some ideas rolling around in my head, but they’re figurative and portrait like, and I have almost no experience at painting those things. So I thought I’d practice with a self-portrait.
